THE RETURN OF MOTHMAN

MONOLOGUE WRITTEN BY CLYDE LEWIS

As we go about our daily lives, we tend to assume that our perceptions, sights, sounds, textures and tastes, are an accurate portrayal of the real world. Sure, when we stop and think about it or when we find ourselves fooled by a perceptual illusion, we realize with a jolt that what we perceive is never the world directly, but rather our brain’s best guess at what that world is like, a kind of internal simulation of an external reality. Still, we bank on the fact that our simulation is a reasonably decent one. If it wasn’t, wouldn’t evolution have weeded us out by now? The true reality might be forever beyond our reach, but surely our senses give us at least an inkling of what it’s really like.

Millions are convinced, merely on the words of others, that there are invisible creatures of such as gods, angels, and demons, who are directing life behind the scenes.

Of course, there is now the prevailing philosophy that even extra-terrestrials have guided us anciently and there are ancient scrolls and tablets which indicate they will return again. However, their return may not be as easy as we might think. In fact, the appearance or even the arrival of these intelligent beings could mean doomsday for some of us.

As we have indicated previously, sometimes the appearance of anything that doesn’t fit in the comfortable confines of our personal reality may in fact, be a harbinger for disaster, cataclysm and war.

One such harbinger is the protagonist in my favorite account of the paranormal, the Mothman.

It has been proposed the Mothman could very well be the angel of death as sightings of the Mothman foretell impending disaster.

This winged human-looking creature was first reported by citizens of West Virginia during the year prior to the horrible collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant.

The Silver Bridge was built in 1928 and connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. On December 15, 1967, it collapsed and then crumbled into the Ohio River during rush hour, killing 46 people without warning. It was one of the worst catastrophes in American history.

Investigators blamed the poor design of the bridge structure and the excessive loads it was never meant to carry, for the collapse. It was determined the entire bridge fell apart because of the failure of one single link.

The Christmas rush applied an extra load to the 40 year old bridge causing a cleavage fracture in one of the eye-bars. This was followed by a ductile fracture near the pin. Unable to support the weight of the entire bridge, the south chain also snapped. The structure only took about one minute to completely fall into the river below.

The police reported the grim sighting of Christmas presents and dead bodies floating down the Ohio River after the bridge had fallen. This was also an eerie coincidence because many residents had strange dreams about people drowning in the river with Christmas presents floating in the water.

Mothman sightings came to stop after the Silver Bridge collapse, leading to the theory that the Mothman and the bridge disaster were directly related. Some claimed to have spotted the Mothman near the bridge just before it fell into the river.

In 1975 the book, The Mothman Prophecies, by John Keel was published. Keel researched the Mothman phenomenon during the months prior to the disaster, and believed supernatural forces were at work in the area of Point Pleasant. The book would later spawn the film of the same name in 2002.

It is interesting to also note that on the day of the first Mothman sighting, Walt Disney died. While this may not have significance to the average investigator it may come as a surprise to many people that the first real contemporary glimpse of a winged creature like Mothman came from the Disney’s film, Fantasia from 1940.

The Chernabog appears in the segment “A Night on Bald Mountain” and has been called Disney’s best representation of pure evil. The huge, nocturnal and winged demon is based on the god of the night in Slavonic mythology. At Walpurgis Night, Chernabog emerges from the peak of Mount Triglaf, near Kiev in southern Russia, to summon all of his minions; he eventually throws them all into the mountain’s fiery pit.

In the movie, Jeepers Creepers, the “creeper” was a winged Mothman-like creature able to regenerate and according to the creators of the film was human at one time. The creeper would feed every 23 years and was first seen as a Scarecrow in the film. Crows of course are known as symbols of death.

In the movie, The Exorcist, the demon that possesses the little girl is the winged-demon, Pazuzu. Historically, the demon Pazuzu would possess warriors and would unleash swarms of locusts, great storms and drought.

He appears at a time when his wife, Lamashtu is actively seeking out children that she can devour. Although Pazuzu is, himself, an evil spirit, he drives away other evil spirits, and appears to warn humans of coming plagues and misfortunes.

According to ancient writings, Pazuzu arrived at the first millennium and then would disappear for a time only to reappear at the turn of a decade, millennium or century to warn of a coming catastrophe.

There are Native American legends about a winged-creature with a dog face, red eyes and a serpent’s body that haunted the Ohio Valley. This is very similar to modern sightings and description of the Mothman. The Native Americans called this creature “Piasu.” Oddly, “Piasu” is not recognized as a name or word that matches any known American Indian language.

In the late 18th century, the newly independent United States of America was pushing its way westward. At the time the Shawnee Nation existed in what is now known as Mason County, West Virginia.

Their leader, Chief Cornstalk, was initially at war with the invaders, but later worked for peace between the two nations. The Chief traveled to Fort Randolph with three other members of his tribe, including his son, on a diplomatic mission. Acting on his own accord, the fort commander decided to hold the Chief and his companions as prisoners. The next day, an unknown tribe of natives killed a soldier traveling outside the fort. Angered by the death of one of their own, the soldiers brutally executed all four Shawnees. As he lay dying, Chief Cornstalk cursed the area that eventually became Point Pleasant.

Some claim the Mothman appearance is part of that curse. Even before Mothman’s appearance, there were disasters attributed to the Chief cornstalk Curse. Deadly coal mine accidents, plane crashes, a train derailment that dumped toxic chemicals into the town’s water supply, and other mishaps and accidents are described as part of the bloody history of the area.

Mothman is said to have also been seen prior to other disasters outside of Point Pleasant adding to the possibility of it being a winged demon, harbinger of doom or angel of death.

In 1978, there was a report of a man wearing a trench coat standing in front of a mine located in Freiburg, Germany. Miners attempted to approach the man when they realized that the man was not wearing a trench coat but had huge wings that covered his body.

The miners who had approached stood in shock and after a moment the dark figure let out a series of piercing shrieks which would later be described by eye witnesses as sounding like 50 men screaming and the sound of a train’s emergency breaks. The minors fled from the creature and the mine’s entrance, from a safe distance the men observed what would later be dubbed the Freiburg Shrieker as it folded its wings back around its body and stood motionless in front of the mine.

The miners reportedly began to busy themselves with clean up outside of the mine, hoping that the Shrieker would go away, it is unclear why they did not reported the beast to the local authorities. After waiting for what seemed like an hour, at approximately 8am, the miners were startled by a massive subterranean explosion which rocked the mine and shook the very ground on which they stood. They rushed to the mine’s entrance to discover the Shrieker was gone and a huge plume of smoke and flame bellowed from the entrance of the mine.

When the smoke and flame died down and officials were able to examine the mine, it was determined that all 36 miners, should they had been at their designated posts, would have perished. This has lead some investigators to suggest the Freiburg Shrieker appeared that day to prevent the men from entering the mine and in the process, saved their lives.

In 1986, shortly before the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster a human looking creature with wings was supposedly sighted, giving some credibility to the idea that the creature is sign of a nearing horrific event.

Four workers at the Chernobyl plant made reports of seeing the creature over the site, and even stranger still, those who had made reports or claimed to have seen it, went on to state they had suffered from horrific nightmares.

Some claimed it looked like a birdman with red eyes, while others stated it appeared to them to be headless.

Responders who entered the disaster zone in the hours following the initial explosion also apparently stated that they witnessed a winged creature “circling in and out of the black smoke.”

The creature became known in legend and folklore as the Black Bird of Chernobyl. It hasn’t been seen since.

There were also rumored sightings of winged human creatures near the World Trade Center before and during the collapse of the Twin Towers.

In 2006, a 53 year old Cherokee Indian named Wohali, and his 25 year old son said that they encountered what only could be described as a man-bat. The creature appeared in front of them on a Highway near La Crosse Wisconsin shrieked and then shot straight up in the air. The sound that the creature made was so intense that both men had to pull over to the side of the road to throw up. They remained sick for at least a week after the encounter.

The man-bat was an estimated 6-7 feet tall, sported bat like, leathery wings with a span of 10-12 feet, long claws on its feet and “hands” and a snarling expression on the face.

Prior to the devastating I-35 W bridge collapse in Minneapolis that happened in 2007 there were reports of Mothman sightings all over the area. There was a sighting of the Mothman in San Antonio as well. I had made some connections to the bridge collapse in Minneapolis to the Sighting in San Antonio since the creature was seen near I-35 as well. There was also a report of an overpass collapsing near where the sighting took place which destroyed at least 11 cement columns.

On November 20th, 2016, an unidentified man allegedly captured images of what he believed to be the Mothman. The alleged return of Mothman happened 5 days after the 50th anniversary of the original sightings there in 1966.

The man was driving along State Route 2 saw something jump from tree to tree. He pulled off the road and snapped some pictures. He gave the pictures to local TV news station, WCHS.

The images show the silhouette of a two-legged, winged creature flying around the tree tops.

Usually when we hear of winged men or women we think of the angles spoken of in our bibles. They have been depicted in artwork as being wholesome looking beings with wings of feathers. Demons on the other hand have always been described as profane creatures that have leathery wings and strike fear in the hearts of men.

John Keel, the author of the Mothman Prophecies, had pondered the possibility of the Mothman being a Tulpa or a shadowy psychic construct that materialized because of consensus thought.

Once the Tulpa is endowed with enough vitality to be capable of playing the part of a real being, it tends to free itself from its maker¹s control. Magicians have called these rebellious manifestations or phantoms which have become real beings.

If we can suspend disbelief for a moment, what if a Tulpa of the Mothman returned to Point Pleasant because the people there were thinking about the 50th anniversary of its first appearance?

John Keel theorized the Mothman and associated Fortean entities might be manifestations of “Ultra-terrestrial” intelligences that are older than humanity and appear in times of anxiety and despair.

Politicians, scientists, and preachers know what deep fears are clouding people’s minds. Rather than giving us hope in what appears to be a hopeless situation, they exploit our deepest fears and the uncertainty that comes with our preparation for an end-of-the-world scenario which has been programmed into us for millennia.

With this preparation and anxiety comes a wave of thought that continues to feed upon itself, eventually creating a negatively charged beast that devours any glint of hope that exists for our future.

If you are paying attention to what is going on now in our world, stop and consider that the end-of-the-world mindset is putting a critical mass of people into a semiconscious state of despair.

Mothman’s so-called recent appearance in Point Pleasant may not be a harbinger for another instance where the Silver Bridge will crumble, but many people are entertaining the idea that the whole world is crumbling.

In an attempt to centralize world power, our leaders and many Americans have opted for an eschaton or end of the world scenario where they will fight until the last man stands and even then they really don’t care who lives or dies just as long it is not them.

There have been many attempts to centralize world power. In the realms of crank conspiracy yarns the United States is without blame.

The New Order as it is diagrammed and explained is always the work of a secret society in cahoots with a fascist government willing to create a super police state that rules from a centralized location. This Order will eventually eliminate our way of life and replace it with a form of secular humanistic socialism.

In the process, however, there will be a lot of casualties, there will be attempts at seizing power from within, there will be rebellions, continued class wars, and civil upheaval with other proposed mayhem that along with Mother Nature could render the planet unlivable and create a sense of mass psychosis fueled by fears of dying in horrible ways.

The antidote of course will be provided by a government that has many different ways to sustain itself and control the people in such a way that a comfortable existence will only exist if there is strict adherence to the government controls.

What sounds like apocalyptic nonsense is now a blueprint for what is to come.

In that case, maybe Mothman has appeared to warn us that this upheaval is closer than we realize.

Beware, the return of Mothman.
