5/18/16: MOUNT ST. HELENS: TERROR FOR SASQUATCH W/ THOM POWELL AND DAVE PAULL

MOUNT ST. HELENS

TERROR FOR SASQUATCH

Immediately after I woke up this morning, I noticed a breaking story about another major earthquake in Ecuador. I posted it on my Facebook page with the caption, “again and again and again.”

The catastrophic cycle is repeating

This is what I am beginning to think as we are seeing major earthquakes being reported all over the planet and chilling warnings that a lot of fault lines are ready to slip, and that the Earth’s crust is dissolving into the mantle in the southeast.

As far back as 1958, scientist Charles Hapgood claimed that the shifting of the earth’s crust and a future core displacement could accelerate the possibility of land mass ripping, extreme weather, extreme cold, remarkably huge tsunamis racing around the globe and super storms with incredible wind velocity. Earthquakes would buckle the land masses and volcanoes would explode furiously.

This year has been a banner year for what can be called peculiar and significant earthquakes in Michigan, Texas, Mississippi, California, Idaho and Washington. In addition, it is being reported that pressure is building in dormant volcanoes in Arizona and California.

For the past few days there have been reports of earthquake swarms reported at Mt. Hood in Oregon, Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens in Washington.

This is alarming because back in 2008 three nearby Alaskan volcanoes, similar in spacing of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt Hood, all erupted within less than a month; Okmok Volcano erupted unexpectedly and explosively on July 12, followed by Cleveland Volcano, 100 miles away, on July 21, and then Kasatochi, unexpected and explosively, on August 7.

Mount Hood is located only about 50 miles away from Portland, Oregon, and over the past 30 days, there have been 96 earthquakes around the south side of the mountain.

Mount Rainier has had the least amount of earthquakes, roughly about 37. What makes this more dangerous that Mount Rainer is closer to major population centers. Scientists have referred to Mt. Rainier as a “time bomb” and as “the most dangerous mountain in the United States because of its potential to killed more people and destroy property.

Now, I want to make sure that you know that I have put many things into perspective and that swarms like this are normal. But what is not normal is that we are seeing this happen at all three volcanoes simultaneously, and this comes on the 36th Anniversary of the eruption of Mount. St.Helens.

Over the past couple of months, there have been a series of earthquakes at Mt. St. Helens, and just within the last 30 days there have been a total of 103 quakes.

Scientists have reported that the reason for these earthquakes is that the magma chamber in the mountain is recharging.

The mountain had a major blow out during the May 18th, 1980 eruption, the “Bulge” on north face, lateral blast removed the upper 1,306.8 ft of the volcano. There have been 5 eruptions of this volcano in the 20th century.

During the blast of 1980 the lava and the mud devastated 229 square miles and destroyed timber valued at several million dollars. This was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States.

Thirty-six years later, Mount St. Helens is in the news again and not just because it is the anniversary of its explosive wrath, it is also in the news because of the simultaneous seismic tremors that it is sharing with Mount Rainier and Mount Hood.

The question is whether or not there is a pipeline of magma and all three are getting charged up.

In 1980, when Mt. St. Helens exploded, it did so because the magma within it was rich in silica. In 2004, when it erupted again, the magma was poor in silica, and the volcano erupted meekly.

The problem is that scientists can’t tell if the magma in Rainier, Hood, or St. Helens is rich or poor in silica before they erupt. This means all three volcanoes could erupt with great ferocity, blowing themselves apart as Mt. St. Helens did in 1980, or they could all erupt mildly, as in 2004.

And it’s possible none of these three volcanoes will do anything in the near future. However, given historical patterns, we think this is the least likely outcome.

The volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest have no regard for human life. They have stood tall for thousands of years, if not millions, periodically erupting right when they were ready to do so. They have destroyed trees, and wildlife in the region and after 36 years the area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest where Mount St. Helens erupted the area has repaired itself.

However, in the aftermath of the terrifying explosion there are plenty of stories to tell, and there are plenty of legends and speculation about what happened during the crises.

Dave Paull who was a reporter at KGW at the time, recalls that the event happened on a Sunday morning and that all members of the staff were called in on the morning to report on the devastation, evacuation and the roadblocks that had to be initiated in order to keep sightseers away from, the mountain.

There is another story however that has been passed around about what happened and since mainstream news would not dare to touch this type of story – I have decided it is something well worth talking about on the 36th anniversary of the incident.

After the ecosystem of Mount St. Helens recovered, many plants and animals returned, evidence suggest Bigfoot did not–at least in the numbers that once existed. It is believed that many of them were killed in the disaster. They along with elk, and deer were vaporized in the explosion.

However further away are the reports that never seem to go away about dead animals including some strange carcasses that were flew out of the area. Some claim those strange carcasses were those of the Sasquatch.

Some say that it is a rural myth while others say it really happened.

The massive eruption of Mt. St. Helens caused colossal streams of mud and silt to come roaring through the forest at speeds of up to 70 mph, destroying anything in its path.

After the eruption, locals had claimed that Sasquatch sightings had diminished.

This led many of the locals fearing that the disaster had killed the majority of the Sasquatch population in the area. The North Fork Survivor’s Shop took it upon themselves to honor the untimely demise of the creature by erecting a gigantic sculpture of Sasquatch, considered to be one of the largest Bigfoot statues in the world, and the only one marks the passing of many of the creatures that were known to frequent the area.

I remember back in the 1980’s I didn’t believe in Bigfoot because I was told by one of my teachers that the bigfoot stories were just tall tales told by drunk hunters and campers.

The teacher happened to know a movie producer named Chuck Sellier who was involved with a Sasquatch film, The Mysterious Monsters, and she told me that he confided in her that Bigfoot was just a legend.

After the Mount St. Helen’s explosion I was convinced that there was no yeti or Sasquatch since none of them were found dead in the aftermath.

It wasn’t until I met the late Lloyd Pye that I started believing again. In his book “Everything You Know is Wrong” he explained Bigfoot in such a way that to me was an attempt to scientifically – prove its existence. There were no supernatural or dimensional theories that were presented and soon I was back to believing in the possibility of an intelligent, migratory mountain ape that has still been elusive to this day.

If Science was not embarrassed to study the so called Bigfoot perhaps they would at least try to determine if some upright walking species of Mountain apes have slipped through the cracks. After all, many of today’s animals got their start as improbable creatures that are believed to be made up in the minds of opportunists and charlatans.

Take a look at some of the animals that exist on this earth and contemplate their looks. An elephant seems so peculiar, a giraffe is just as unusual. Rumors flew about a huge pig-eating lizard and there were many who laughed until the Komodo Dragon was discovered in 1912.

The Panda, at first was a hallucination and a myth told among the Chinese people’s before it was found. Its legend had been around for 100 years or so before it was revealed to the western world in 1937.

I once asked Lloyd Pye the question about Mount St. Helens and why no dead Bigfoot were found after the eruption in 1980. He told me that most of them would have been buried in the mud and silt. Some of them would have been vaporized, while others may have sensed that the mountain was about to blow up and left.

He had speculated that perhaps the entire yeti population near Mount St. Helens had vanished. This was a conversation we had back in the 1990’s. In 2013, Pye was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer – he eventually died in December of that year.

Nearly a month ago I met Connie Willis, a weekend host on Coast To Coast AM. She arrived in Washington to attend a Bigfoot conference. She was the guest of Thom Powell a science teacher who is the author of the book “Edges of Science.”

Powell was mentioned in a recent article that once again brings up the story of Mount St. Helens and the possible decimation of the Bigfoot population in the area near the mountain after the eruption.

Powell picked up on a story by an anonymous government employee who alerted the Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) about a 7.5 feet long/tall burn victim with “multiple burns on hands, feet, legs and body; some 2nd and 3rd degree burns”. According to the story, on August 6, 1999, Battle Mountain, Nevada, exploded into several simultaneous range fires in what would be known as the Battle Mountain Complex Fire. A Bigfoot was hurt in the fire according to an anonymous government employee. The story was later dismissed but Powell believes it really happened and that the whole story was an elaborate cover-up.

It had been years since the story broke and still no one had come forward to talk about the story.

That was until a curious entry was place into a Bigfoot discussion blog called Bigfoot Evidence where an anonymous National Guardsman who claimed to be at Mount St. Helens claimed that they also came in contact with an injured Sasquatch.

The blogger writes:

“I was a National Guardsman at the Mount Saint Helens site and this is the first time I have ever spoken about what I saw firsthand. I lived in Spokane, Washington and was 24 at the time this all took place.

I have read some of the other stories and they only tell part of the story.

I was placed on a special cleanup crew farther up the mountain. A large tent was set up and it was be guarded by armed soldiers who were not part of the guard. There were numerous soldiers on the scene that were not members of the guard.

We were given a briefing by soldier who said that “after he spoke to us, we would forget about him and what he said at the end of the mission”. This was strange as we never dealt with anything before.

Myself and four other guardsmen were told to follow a group of soldiers and not to speak to each other and to remain very quiet overall. We were told to get into a jeep and wait. We sat in the jeep for maybe a half hour. Eventually another jeep arrived carrying a civilian and another member of the military.

The civilian was brought into the tent and he emerged a few minutes later followed by a large hairy creature. It looked like a large man covered in fur and the best way to describe it was like “Beast” from X-Men only brown.

The creature looked to have some burns and had a bandage on its arm. At first we were afraid but when it walked by we could see its eyes and it just looked very sad and somber. He climbed into the back of a pickup with the civilian and the two were speaking in a weird language I had never heard. It would cough at times.

We followed the truck to different areas. There were 5 total stops. Each time we stopped we were told to follow the civilian and the creature. Each time we followed them to rocky areas where there were caves. The creature would make a sound and then listen. At the first area he made a sound and we all just waited in silence. After a few minutes, the creature looked at the civilian and then at the ground. The civilian at one point touched its shoulder and called for a canteen to give the creature a drink.

The same thing happened at the next area but this time there was a response to the sound. After a few minutes two soldiers emerged from the cave carrying a badly burned creature just like the one with the civilian. The creature bent down next to it and looked it over for about five minutes. It then spoke softly with the civilian. It turned and walked back to the truck and we were told to follow as we were walking away we heard a shot and we knew it was one of the soldiers putting the creature out of its misery.

There was no response at the third or fourth site but at the fifth there was another return sound to the creature. This time it was different and soldiers carried out a creature with a badly burned left leg. We were then ordered to all help get a very large stretcher from the truck and to help place the creature on it and carry it back to the truck.

We then immediately returned to the base camp. The creature was carried into the tent while the other creature and the civilian spoke. We were ordered to stay in the jeep until we were to be debriefed. As the creature turned to walk into the tent it looked at us and made a waving gesture with its hand. We took it as a thank you for what we had done.

By the time we were ordered out of the jeep we were all in shock. We were called over to an area to be debriefed and it was just strange. I will never forget what was said because it was just not what was expected. I thought I would hear “You took an oath and now you need to live up to it for your country with a threat also implied. A different high ranking soldier just said, “look, do you all really want an explanation? You saw what we were doing. These creatures live in these areas; they mean no harm and want to be left alone. Do you really want to do anything that may cause them trouble? They are like us in a lot of ways. If you need or want to talk about this just wait about 30 years, by that time there will likely be no reason to keep them a secret.”

We were then ordered back to the guard camp because “they were breaking it up so nobody saw too much and knew everything that happened”. We did not speak of it and after a few months I just took the attitude that these things live out there and honestly my life is no different because of it. I only bring it up now because people have been writing a lot about Mt. Saint Helens and I believe that the whole story should be told.

I will also say this. I like to camp and hike and have done so many times throughout the Northwest. Every time I would look for signs of these creatures, tracks, listen for sounds etc. I never saw or heard anything other than what I did that day on Mt. Saint Helens.

I can only say it is a great story but apparently it isn’t the only one of its kind.

Ray Crowe was a Bigfoot researcher who lived in Portland Oregon. He was the founder of the Western Bigfoot society.

At one of Ray Crowe’s Western Bigfoot Meetings, someone brought up the topic of corpses of Sasquatch after the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. The witness heard of two Sasquatch the Army Corps of Engineers had taken out of the volcanic devastation two months after the initial blast. Terry Reams another researcher heard of a dredging operation of the Cowlitz River and two bodies were found in the sand. A chopper flew them off.

Joe Beelart from West Linn Oregon mentioned that the crane doing the dredging was from the Manatowaka Company and that the bodies were found two weeks after the Mt. St. Helen’s blast of May 18, 1980. He suggested that somebody might want to track down the company and find out who was working the shift that the bodies had been found on.

During a tour of the devastation by helicopter in 1985, the Viet veteran helicopter pilot mentioned a similar story saying that there were military helicopters that choppered out nets full of burned and semi burned elk, deer, bear and something with hairy charred arms hanging out of the drop nets. They were taken to a common pit where the bodies were burned to avoid disease and contamination of the rivers.

There have been many an anonymous reports that have confirmed many dead Bigfoot after the Mount St. Helen’s explosion.

Finally there was a report filed by BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) that a very large male O-mah, the name given to Bigfoot by Yakima tribes showed up badly burned east of the devastation near tribal lands. This Oh-ma or Bigfoot was later captured by men in military gear captured and later airlifted it to an undisclosed location.

The Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Oh-mah or even the yeti still has not been placed in a Zoo or has been placed in captivity. Until then we will always term it a mythological beast. The question is whether the legend is far more intriguing than any proof that would show the creature to be more mundane and less supernatural.

I finally had my chance at seeing the creature when I was at ECETI near Mount Adams in Washington.

There was a reported Forest fire on the other side of the mountain and we speculated that the young Bigfoot was hungry and stopped to eat the apples that were in an orchard near the library of the compound.

We were packing up on a Sunday morning to leave the camp. We all gathered in the library area that had an adjacent kitchen where we were brewing coffee and washing dishes. I was sitting in a rocking chair in the main living area and there was my friend Sarah and another listener Carse sitting on a couch. We were all sipping coffee and talking about the trip home when all of a sudden I saw something peculiar.

I saw a hairy man running away from the apple trees and then darting into a pathway that led into the adjacent woods above the camp. Whatever it was it was covered in brown ash hair, very coarse, and reminded me of the character, Teen Wolf, played my Micheal J. Fox or even the Pakuni from the TV show, Land of the Lost. I then immediately blurted out “Bigfoot—Look its Bigfoot!”

No one in the room with me had a camera in fact we were already loading the camera equipment into the cars as we were packing and my camera crew and videographers left the night before. So no one was there to record or snap a picture of whatever it was I saw.

I was reluctant to even talk about it because without visual proof – it was just another big fish story – only the fish just happened to be a biped with a hairy body.

I did take some pictures of the crushed grass that he was standing on. I did not make casts because the ground was too dry.

That was the best I could do – I mean who has a camera in their hand waiting for Bigfoot to show up?

As much as it was my first experience where I saw Bigfoot I realized that what we had for proof is not as exciting as a picture of the furry creature. I knew that if I shared the story, it probably would not be believed.

However on the 36th anniversary of the Mount St. Helen’s disaster, I thought it would be interesting to talk about a side of the story that probably would never be brought up.

People have a hard time embracing enigmatic mysteries or experiences – but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen.

There are things that exist just outside of our normalcy construct and if we pay attention we may just unlock a mystery or two about what we can’t easily fit into a finite box.
