OPERATION: SEA MONKEY

A TALE OF BIGFOOT AND BIG SHOES TO FILL

MONOLOGUE WRITTEN BY CLYDE LEWIS

This year has been a big year for reports of Bigfoot sightings. The reason I know this is because this year alone I have broadcast at least three shows dealing with the creature and in the year I actually saw one, I only did one show about it. Bigfoot stories and shows often generate a great deal of mail, both favorable and caustic.

The mainstream media and Hollywood has turned the Sasquatch into a tabloid joke, but when their tracks were first being taken seriously in the early 1950’s, they were studied in great detail by several highly-qualified scientific researchers.

However, decades have now past and well, it is unfortunate that research has been limited and in most cases, abandoned by scientists. They can’t easily explain what the creature is and how it fits into the timeline of evolved or higher primate life.

This year, the call went out from scientists willing to reopen investigations into the possibility of a Yeti or Sasquatch.

In the paper, “Sasquatch and Scientists: Reporting Scientific Anomalies” the call came From Eastern University of Michigan saying that time is running out for finding forensic evidence and that serious research and or proof must be presented in order to continue the research on the species that has been elusive and in most circles mythological.

The truth is that science is the arbiter of what exists and what doesn’t and therefore, Bigfoot remains a tabloid subject instead of a very real mountain ape or swamp ape in the southern regions of the United States.

The reality of Sasquatch has and always will be put into question by mainstream science and most discussion are shut down because it appears that most scientists and anthropologists want to spare themselves the continuing embarrassment of having to confess they do not have the ability to say that yes, we have proof, or the data checks out, or yes we have a true specimen and not some unshaven nudist hanging out in the Pacific Northwest.

People take for granted that all species have been identified and so the idea of a great ape species living in North America is an absurdity until the “body of evidence” is exposed to the world. Even if it was exposed, the reality of such a creature could be as mundane as an endangered ape or gorilla that somehow found a way to cross continents and remain elusive from hunters and investigators, only to show up unexpectedly and witnessed by deep woods campers.

The whole idea of new and mysterious species being discovered and categorized is academic to serious researchers who realize that even in recent history, animals that were once thought of as products of mythology have suddenly appeared and have been categorized by scientists.

The difficulty in capturing an undeniable picture, video, or even hair or scat samples of the Bigfoot has caused a number of people to dismiss outright the possibility of such a creature existing. However, eyewitness testimony continues to pour in and recently the sightings of such a creature have increased.

Native American Indian tribes have talked about these creatures for centuries. White settlers have recorded their presence as well and the stories have continued throughout history. Even Teddy Roosevelt claimed to have seen one.

It wasn’t until the 1970’s when interest was sparked by several documentaries that were produced about the creature and where a grainy 16 mm film was showcased purporting absolute evidence of what appears to be a female Sasquatch walking into the forest.

This famous piece of footage is known as the Patterson/Gimlin film.

In the first week of September, I ventured out to Kennewick, Washington to attend the International Bigfoot Conference. You may remember that in the late 1990’s, the remains of a prehistoric Paleoamerican man was found on a bank of the Columbia River. It was one of the most complete ancient skeletons ever found. Radiocarbon tests on bone have shown it to was anywhere from 8 and half to 10,000 years old.

Believe it or not, this discovery gave some hope for Bigfoot researchers.

The Kennewick Man was described as having more Caucasoid features than the modern Natives in the area where he was found. There were many ethnic groups that colonized the New World. Some scientists believe that, in addition to those who came from Siberia through the Bering Strait, people may have come from Europe by following the heavy ice sheets surrounding Greenland.

There have been some theories that the Yeti migrated from parts of Russia across the Bering Strait to the Pacific Northwest. This is why the most Bigfoot sightings have happened in Alaska, Vancouver, British Columbia, the island clusters surrounding Vancouver Island, Washington State, Oregon, and Northern California.

While there are no direct Sasquatch connections to the Kennewick Man, it does suggest that primitive men made journeys to the new world using the oceans and land passes to migrate.

While attending the bigfoot conference, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Gimilin, the surviving member of the Patterson/Gimilin film that purports to show a female Bigfoot walking through a clearing IN Northern California near the Bluff Creek area on the Klamath River.

Gimilin confirmed that what both men saw was real and that hours before Roger Patterson died, he told Bob that he had planned to go back to the area to try and trap the beast.

In 1998, Ground Zero received word that someone was about to come forward stating the film was indeed a hoax and the man who wore the monkey suit was about to step up and prove the Patterson/Gimilin film to be a put on.

Well, more than one person came forward making claims that they were responsible for the hoax even though Roger Patterson before his death in 1972 continued to make the claim that it was indeed the footage of a female Sasquatch.

John Landis, best known for directing the college-themed hit movie, “Animal House” claims it was all a hoax perpetrated by the special-effects artist who created the Oscar-winning outfits for the movie “Planet of the Apes.” The special effects artist John Chambers never has confirmed these allegations.

John Chambers is now dead.

Ground Zero revealed the name of another alleged Patterson Film “director” back in 1998 as X-Zone host and Canadian paranormal researcher, Rob McConnell named Harry Kimball as the director who perpetrated the hoax, not John Landis.

Kimball claimed the film was edited and produced in Canada not Washington and there was a man that wore a rented Gorilla Suit. Now, Kimball has been silent on the matter.

Another Patterson/Gimlin film critic and Bigfoot researcher, Clifton Crook made a claim that he could see a bell-shaped fastener on the Bigfoot in the film claiming it was a monkey suit.

He later was exposed as one of the hoaxers of a faked photo of Bigfoot that allegedly was obtained by a park ranger in the Wild Creek area near Mt. Rainier, Washington. He also has been accused of faking many photos to get attention.

It was remarkable honor to have Bob Gimlin declare for the Ground Zero audience that the original Bigfoot film was not a hoax and that all of the so-called “directors of the film” have been proven to be frauds and opportunists.

Once again, the tabloid treatment and claims of fakery has created some hostile critics of anything dealing with the Sasquatch.

However, it has to said that with the discovery of Kennewick Man, and the recent reports of possible cloning of Neanderthal man one cannot deny that the fossil record and timelines reveal there most certainly proof of native, indigenous, bipedal primates on this planet. While no one has claimed to have uncovered a Bigfoot skeleton, we must admit that even if there was one uncovered we would have nothing to compare it too.

The Sasquatch appears to be quite similar to gorillas or chimpanzees that walk upright. The Sasquatch could also be a bear hybrid that walks upright and has feet that look similar to a hominid.

Once again without a specimen or a clear photo, we would have to have some animal that we know exists to compare it to and even then what criteria does science have for the proof of a species of animal or manimal.

Humans encounter hominoids all over the world on a fairly regular basis, and each description of them, no matter where on Earth it occurs, matches other descriptions of them with astonishing consistency. Those descriptions are of creatures built exactly like the obviously non-human skeletons of the so-called paleo-humans like Kennewick Man or the “pre-humans” like Cro-Magnons that date back some 120,000 years.

With the internet and social media the business of faking Bigfoot photos and footage is now a common occurrence. This puts to the test our powers of observation and our powers of discernment. I firmly believe the Bigfoot enigma is not paranormal but a flesh and blood creature and if the tabloids and new age Bigfoot enchanters hadn’t have muddied the waters, Bigfoot would not be the butt of jokes and the object of ridicule.

Science and the public should treat this in a more neutral and indifferent fashion. I wonder if it is almost impossible to conduct an investigation into the Sasquatch without prejudice, ego or hidden agenda.

With the inroads to scientific progress, and valid sets of questions and investigations the new frontier of knowledge can be had and new investigations can provide vindication for a lot of unconventional views on what is out there in the woods.

Recently, the Oregonian newspaper did a feature on a bold new investigation into Bigfoot that is now seeking funding in order to find the scientific evidence that has been called for recently.

The endeavor for scientific breakthrough is called Operation: Sea Monkey, which is a very serious, professional expedition into the Canadian wilderness in search of Sasquatch.

A group of researchers and a videographer are asking for $5,000 to help them explore the Broughton Archipelago, a cluster of “mostly uninhabited” islands on the northeastern side of Vancouver Island.

The group will reside on a 68-foot ship during the trip, and plans to use the donations for fuel, provisions and equipment like generators and batteries.

The trip is sponsored in part by the American Primate Conservancy, a Portland group dedicated to finding irrefutable evidence of the legendary monster’s existence, securing it official recognition, and providing legal protection for the creatures.

The Conservancy’s co-founder, Todd Neiss, will help lead the expedition. Neiss had his first and only Bigfoot sighting while serving in the military in Oregon’s coastal range in 1993.

While he was originally a skeptic, after he saw “three enormous bipedal creatures” across a ravine, he was forced to accept their existence as fact.

In an interview with The Oregonian newspaper, Neiss said he’s more enthusiastic about this trip than he’s been in a long time, and thinks the chances of another sighting are especially good. There have been sightings in the area before in late September, Neiss said, and he’s hoping his team will be in the right place at the right time.

The group plans to use drones, night vision cameras and thermal imaging to locate the creatures, he said. The team will then try to get as close to them as possible, then shine spotlights on them while cameras record the scene, he said. The hope is to return with solid evidence of Sasquatch’s existence that can be used to a protected status for the animal, Neiss said.

He’ll be joined by Ron Morehead, who recorded creature vocalizations known as the “Sierra Sounds” in the early 1970s; Thomas Steenburg, an author who has investigated over 100 sightings across western Canada; Tom Sewid, another eye-witness-turned-researcher; and Gunnar Monson, co-founder of the Tillamook Forest Research Group and co-host of the Monster-X Radio show.

What we need in all honesty is a valid set of answers to any and all of the questions about what we are actually dealing with. With the use of new tech we will be seeing an expansionist view of what is out there and we hope that it will yield evidence that foils the negative tabloid stereotype of Bigfoot. After all when it comes to Bigfoot, scientists and researchers have some big loose end that they need to tie up…and even bigger shoes to fill.
