I have noticed lately that my news feed has been sending me stories about connecting with the spirit world in order to speak with loved ones who may have died from COVID-19 or fighting in wars. As I was reading these stories and how they fit with the paranormal themes of the show – I couldn’t help but notice how even in the world of the supernatural, human behavior tends to repeat and what may have happened 100 years ago may be happening again as the fascination of contact spirits has never really left us.
Back in October of 2019, we used a Ouija board on the air and we had tremendous success in having the spirit of the moment point us in the direction of the immediate future.
Now the practice is trending. This is not at all about ghost busting or shaking sage at a haunted house – this is well thought out contact where a séance is held to gain knowledge about the future.
In 1952, there was a séance where a group of elites got together to summon what they claimed were nine beings that watched over the world – they were appropriately called the Council of Nine – or The Nine. The purpose of the séance organized by paranormal researcher Andrija Puharich, intended to channel entities through those attending.
Participants included socialites Arthur Young of Bell Helicopter fame, his wife Ruth Forbes Paine Young, whose family associated with the Oswalds in Dallas area. Communication with these entities was handled by the medium, an Indian gentleman referred to as Dr. D.G. Vinod, who slipped into a trance state at 12:15 AM and began speaking as ‘the Nine’ by 12:30. Afterwards Dr. Vinod would claim to have no memory of the conversation that preceded between the Ennead Nine and their human counterparts.
During the course of the seance the mystical Nine informed the human nine that they would be in charge of bringing about a mystical renaissance on Earth. From there the Nine ventured into quasi-scientific, philosophical constructs that eventually led to the acknowledgement that they, the Grand Ennead, were in fact extra- terrestrial beings living in an immense spaceship hovering invisibly over the planet and that the assembled congregation had been selected to promote their agenda on Earth.undefined
When theundefinedinfluenzaundefinedpandemic hit the U.S. between 1918 and 1920, Americans wanted answers. Their questions weren’t limited to what caused the pandemic or might prevent the next one. They struggled with more eternal concerns, such as what happens to us after we die and whether it’s possible to communicate with dead loved ones.
The flu pandemic wasn’t alone in spurring this search for meaning. World War I, which ended in November 1918, had racked up a worldwide death toll of 20 million soldiers and civilians, according to one estimate. And if that wasn’t sufficiently staggering, the influenza had taken at least 50 million lives. In both cases, most victims were young—between 20 and 40, in the case of the flu—and left behind parents, spouses, sweethearts and children.
Not surprisingly, spiritualism, which promised a window into the afterlife, saw a sudden resurgence in the United States, Great Britain, France and elsewhere. A February 1920 headline in the New YorkundefinedSunundefinedsaid it all: “Riddle of the Life Hereafter Draws World’s Attention.”
The two most prominent proponents of spiritualism were British: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Oliver Lodge. Doyle was, of course, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Lodge was a respected physicist known for his work with radio waves.
Both men had a longtime interest in the supernatural, and both had lost sons in the war. Lodge’s son Raymond had been struck down by a shell fragment while fighting in Belgium in 1915. Doyle’s son, Kingsley, had been wounded in France in 1916 and died of pneumonia in 1918, likely brought on by the influenza pandemic. Doyle also lost his younger brother to the flu in 1919, while his wife’s brother had been killed in Belgium in 1914.
After the war, both men lectured widely in the U.S. and also wrote books describing their psychic experiences.
Lodge’s 1916 book,undefinedRaymond, or Life and Death, describes numerous purported contacts with his late son. Lodge and his wife met with a variety of mediums, who practiced such techniques as automatic writing and table tilting to communicate with the dead.
In automatic writing, the spirit supposedly guided the medium’s hand to write out messages. In table tilting, participants typically sat around a séance table while the medium recited the alphabet. When the medium arrived at the letter the spirit had in mind, the table would tilt, turn, levitate or make some other inexplicable move. Still other mediums went into trances and allowed the dead to speak directly through them.
In his messages, Raymond offered a comforting version of the great beyond, complete with flowers, trees, dogs, cats and birds. He repeatedly assured his parents that he was happy. He told them he’d reconnected with his late grandfather plus a brother and sister who died in infancy, and made many new friends. He reported that soldiers who’d lost an arm in battle found it magically restored, although those who were “blown to pieces” took a bit longer to become whole.
While Lodge and Doyle appear to have been sincere in their beliefs, they inadvertently gave a boost to scam artists who saw money to be made from grieving families and the simply curious.
Thomas Edison actually had an interest in contacting the dead – but he believed that he could use technology to somehow find a frequency where the dead could speak.
Nicola Tesla of course also had the same vision; in fact, many of the special ghost boxes that paranormal researches have used are part of this frequency scrying that both Edison and Tesla envisioned.
General Electric also talks about Edison’s devices on its website and how the spirit machine was a national sensation after World War I.

In 1920, Americans were still reeling from the horrific casualties of World War I. Meanwhile, spiritualism, Ouija boards, and the slew of new technological inventions from men like Thomas Edison were capturing the national zeitgeist. All these converged when Edison told American Magazine that he was working on a device known as a “spirit phone” — in other words, a phone that would let the living communicate with the dead.
The result was a national craze. Most of the major newspapers and magazines in the country leapt to cover this astounding new “invention.” And the magazine that broke the story received over 600 letters to the editor from people obsessed with the device.

It needs to be addressed that Edison by this time had already invented the phonograph which was an invention that could play back the voices of the dead. Radios were also able to play the voices of dead souls for the living’s enjoyment so the logical next step was to contact the dead using several of the ideas that he had patented.
Now computers can play voices of dead people as well. It was a concept that now would be taken for granted but back in the 1920’s people hearing the voices of the dead played for them on a box and a rolled tube was phenomenal.
However, the basic tools that were used for divination were crystal balls, tarot cards, reading tea leaves and palm reading. The Ouija board was certainly a tool that was used as a theater prop for mediums that used automatic writing.
These talking boards have become a controversial way to accomplish contact with the dead but there are also many factors that point to the idea that a session with the board can also dig deep into the subconscious mind where you become a medium and channel to the board what is deep inside of you.
Ouija boards are not, scientists say, powered by spirits or even demons. Disappointing but also potentially useful because they’re powered by us, even when we protest that we’re not doing it, we swear. Ouija boards work on a principle known to those studying the mind for more than 160 years: the ideometer effect.
In 1852, physician and physiologist William Benjamin Carpenter published a report for the Royal Institution of Great Britain, examining these automatic muscular movements that take place without the conscious will or volition of the individual—this means that the board itself is nothing more than a theatrical tool to channel what is being relayed through the bodies of those who touch it.
Mediums that place themselves in trances do the same thing without the use of Ouija boards and yet most people have no problem seeking out a medium or listen to psychic who receives promptings from a disembodied spirit.
The Ouija board has certainly received an unnecessarily bad reputation and many people do not know why. The reason is because of the movie The Exorcist that was released in 1973.
The Exorcist scared terrified theater goers in 1973, with all that pea soup and head-spinning and the implication that 12-year-old Regan was possessed by a demon after playing with a Ouija board by herself changed how people saw the board. It was the same effect that Psycho had on film-goers as many were scared to take showers or Jaws where people were afraid to swim in the oceans after the film was released.
The dodgy reputation still exists with many people in the paranormal community today; however, the more you learn about the board the more they realize that many of the bad experiences that happen with it come from their own collective unconscious.
Every paranormal investigator has used tools to pick up disturbances or electromagnetic changed in a room. They have used mediums that sense some things and then say what they are feeling which again is free thought that flows through the medium but somehow if it flows through a medium into their hands-on planchette it becomes an evil practice?
You can’t have it both ways – the board literally brings theater into the mix, just like tarot cards, throwing runes or crystal balls.
You can actually have contact with the dead or even a demon without touching a board. Dowsing rods and even pendulums work the same way as Ouija boards and yet those who use them do not think that they are in league with Satan.
Anyone that has ever had the desire to get connected with someone in the spirit world may need to see what they can do to reach out to the spiritual realm. There are professionals that are equipped to help those that want to take this journey. It is all about scoping the way that you want to reach spirits. There are several courses of action that can get difference results that lead to the spirit world.
People that have a need to speak to someone from the other side will be happy to know that there are online psychics that can help them through this. What people will quickly find out when they are reaching out is that there is a whole new world of concepts and codes that they will not know about unless they read up and learn. Contacting people from the spiritual world requires patience. It is not something that is instantly available. This is something that takes time and practice.
It becomes easier when you have gone through some of the trial and error of this whole new world. It is all about taking the time to figure out what works. That is why people that are looking for a chance to reach the spirit side should look at this as a process.
The thing that you will quickly realize is that you must be willing to speak directly when the spirit comes into your presence. You have to be direct and summon the spirit that you are trying to reach.
There are many spirits that have the ability to dwell among us. It is about getting connected to who you are actually trying to reach by speaking their names. Once you have opened to portal to the spirit world you have to push your energy towards the spirit that you are trying to get to come into your presence.
It is about more than channeling the energy of the spirit you seek. It is also about tuning out the other spirits and putting yourself into that space with the spirits that you seek.
